How to Break Financial Glass Ceilings (in your healing career)
I was sitting in a Los Angeles guest house that cost $1200 of my $2000 monthly income.
If I ate most of my meals off the plates of the kids I cooked for, I would have just enough money to scrape together for a healing session.
One year, I spent that leftover $800 on a flight to my first Level 1&2 EFT Tapping Training.
EFT Tapping uses acupuncture points to reduce physical stress. In the workshop, I saw how tapping on stressful memories helps your brain differently about the limitations in your past (i.g. the loss of my brother, my parent’s divorce, financial scarcity), which in turn changes the way you think about your future.
On top of the stress reduction and mindset work, each point detoxes one of the major organs, which is why, after a week-long intensive of tapping, my headaches ceased. My chronic anxiety felt lighter. My skin looked less inflamed, and TMI, but my digestion was smooth moving.
The researcher and trainer, Dawson Church, claimed that EFT could reduce my anxiety and free me from limiting beliefs long-term.
What were my anxieties?
A deep fear of public speaking (Never would I ever have believed I’d soon be teaching alongside the best-selling author teaching that workshop).
Telling people what I really wanted to do for a living: Teaching Holistic Healing.
What were my limiting beliefs?
I will never make a living as an EFT Practitioner.
I will always be afraid of public speaking.
I’m from the tri-state area, where holistic healing (in the early 2000s) was taboo.
But my family had experienced the tragic loss of my older brother and holistic healing was the only thing that got my family back on track.
We didn’t tell anyone about our holistic ways. We were bred in the prep school culture of New England and the corporate grind of the Tri-State Area.
We were conditioned to pursue and praise the “prestigious” college (check) and the “legitimate” career title that you can flaunt on Linked In (Uncheck).
Despite graduating with a 4.0 from one of the top journalism school in the country, I was nannying (Thanks 2008 recession). The job barely paid my bills. It didn’t look good on LinkedIn, but, it didn’t start until 2 p.m.: I had all morning to work on building my dream EFT career.
My bigger problem was that when someone would call me to ask about my EFT sessions, my stomach would churn with guilt.
“I’m really struggling in my marriage, what are your rates?”
“I just lost my job and my anxiety is making it hard to apply to new jobs, do you have sliding scale?”
I felt responsible for helping them.
They needed the help: How dare I slap a price tag on that? Who was I to say, “Well yes I can help you, but you have to pay me.”
I knew I could help them, but I felt guilty charging.
Have you been there?
Have you wanted to develop your career, but when it comes to the financial exchange, your passion turns to imposter syndrome?
Imposter Syndrome: The sense that you are not qualified in your field.
I was a trained Reiki Master, yoga practitioner, breathwork facilitator, and now, EFT Tapping Practitioner. What else did I need in order to feel qualified? I needed to braek through my financial glass ceiling.
What is a glass ceiling? The invisible barrier standing between your current life, and the life you are creating.
My glass ceiling: If someone needs your help, you need to help them for free.
I needed to actually apply EFT to the memories that formed my glass ceiling, the ones that taught me:
EFT is not a “legitimate” career and
No one will pay more than $100 for a session
Last year I was charging $250 per session.
What allowed me to tell clients this rate and feel like it was a STEAL vs. a ridiculous ask?
EFT Tapping.
I tapped on the memories that taught me:
You are responsible for other people’s happiness
You are not legitimate if you don’t have a PhD
You can’t make money as a solopreneur.
Beneath every glass ceiling is a list of limiting beliefs.
Next week I’ll share where these limiting beliefs come from, but today, let’s take inventory:
What do you want to do for a living and how much (in an ideal world) do you want to make?
Let loose here: I won’t judge you for being greedy or selfish (those are childhood and cultural conditions we will explore later)
What is your glass ceiling? Get specific with a financial or career glass ceiling.
Use these sentence starters:
I can’t make more than $$$ doing what I love.
It’s impossible to make more than $$$ each month.
What limiting beliefs reinforce this glass ceiling?
Use these sentence starters:
If I charged that much, people would think… (I am selfish/delusional)
I would feel… (greedy/ like a not-caring person)
Making an easy and good living doing what I love… (is impossible/ will take years/ is only possible for people who…)
When did you learn these beliefs were true?
What is one daily practice you can start to begin to address these glass ceilings and limiting beliefs?
Some of you are already pursuing your dream to the max. Go you! Use my questions to up-level and raise the roof.
Some of you are taking the first steps. That’s the hardest part. Use my questions to identify the limiting beliefs that keep you from stepping into your path more fully.
Some of you don’t know where to start. Use my Qs to establish a goal. Then use the prompts to uncover the sources of guilt or unworthiness that make it hard to own what you want.
One step you can take is to learn to tap like a pro.
One of my favorite parts of the EFT Level 1&2 training is that in Session 1 you learn to tap on the anxieties that limit your goals.
Then in Session 2 you learn to tap on the Limiting Beliefs that reinforce them.
Then in Session 3 & 4, you learn techniques to release the resistance and glass ceilings that keep you from building your dreams.
If I had never learned to tap out of these root causes, I would probably be on the path of my conditioning: Applying to a 9-5 job or stuck on a job that didn’t compensate me… all while procrastinating on what I really wanted to do.
Back in 2011, I NEVER would have thought I’d be an EFT Trainer.
Cut to 5 years later, and I was writing the curriculum for one of the largest EFT Accreditations in the world, and teaching alongside Dawson Church (my first Level 1&2 Trainer) at Eslane Institute! (Goodbye to my seemingly insurmountable public speaking fear).
Life is funny that way.
Our past sets our glass ceiling: I can’t, I won’t, It will never happen; And then we can choose to rebel against it.
For the sake of your future, I hope this email is your sign: Rebel against it!
If you have questions about how to rebel against specific glass ceilings, I’m an email away.
