How Tapping on ‘Positive’ Emotions Can Block Your Business
‘Happy Tapping’ is a term that EFT practitioners use that is synonymous with “bad tapping.”
Subtext: Happy tapping doesn’t work.
EFT Tapping is a stress reduction pressure point therapy that is proven to reduce fear-based feelings like stress, resistance, self-doubt, and insecurity that can get in the way of goal-setting.
In a typical EFT session, you’d identify the fear-based feeling and tap on it until it dissolves.
We’re trained that tapping on joy or peace is not useful:
Tapping on happy feelings is like shouting the mantra: “I’m financially free,” when you’re actually living in your mom’s basement.
An effective round of EFT would be tapping on the shame of being broke or the fear of asking for a raise. EFT would reduce your stress about worst-case scenarios and get you into a motivated state.
Instead of spraying perfume over a bad smell, you clean out the source of the smell until it smells good naturally.
Normally, you tap on the negative until the positive sounds true, but what happens when a positive emotion is unsupportive?
What happens when you feel joy scrolling social media instead of marketing your business?
What happens when you only feel good enough when someone praises you?
What happens when downing an entire box of donuts is the only way you feel peace at the end of the day?
Despite being POSITIVE, the feelings conflict with your GOALS.
The solution: Learn to tap on unsupportive “positive" emotions with the scripts below.
During a recent EFT Masterclass, I tapped with a student on the positive feelings of scrolling Instagram instead of working on their online course. The difference between happy tapping and what we did is that underneath the dopamine hit of scrolling were fear and shame:
Shame around procrastinating and fear of failing once they put their work into the world.
When a positive emotion is leading to unwanted habits (that might sabotage your career) it’s not only effective to tap on the “positive,” it’s necessary.
How did we tap on the unsupportive positive feelings?
We tapped the side of the hand and voiced the inner conflict:
Even though I feel a rush of excitement turning on social media instead of working on my course, I have compassion for myself.
Even though it feels so good to scroll social media instead of working on my course, I have compassion for myself.
From the outside, you would hear us tapping on “positive” emotions, but they aren’t positive. They are unsupportive.
From now on, don’t think about positive vs. negative emotions.
Instead, think about supportive vs. unsupportive emotions.
Ask yourself: Does this feeling or urge support my goals? If not, tap on it until the emotion loses its power.
Want a formula to tap on unsupportive “positive” feelings?
Follow these steps.
Tap the side of the hand with me.
Voice or visualize:
Even though it feels so good to [unwanted habit] instead of [true desire] I have compassion for myself.
Even though it feels better to [unsupportive habit], than [what I actually want to do] I choose to have compassion for myself.
Even though I’d rather [unwanted habit] because it makes me feel [positive emotion], I choose to push past the discomfort and [empowered intention].
If an unsupportive ‘positive emotion’ is blocking your career, forward this to your favorite practitioner and ask them to tap with you on it.
